September in the Garden: The perfect time to revitalise Your outdoor space!

As summer begins to wind down and September fast approaches, it is easy to think that the gardening year is coming to an end. In reality, September can be one of the most rewarding times of the year to spend some time in your garden.

The intense heat of summer has usually eased, the soil can still be warm, and there is often enough moisture around to help plants establish themselves. It is also a month of transition: summer colour may be fading, autumn is beginning to appear, and the garden can benefit from a little attention before the colder months arrive.

For many households, September also marks another important change – the kids are heading back to school. Once the school routine is back in full swing, you may suddenly find that you have a little more time to look at your outdoor space and think about what could be improved.

If your garden has been neglected over the summer, or simply no longer works as well as you would like, September could be the ideal opportunity to revitalise it.

Make the most of the changing season

A garden does not have to be at its most colourful in June or July to be enjoyable. In fact, a well-designed garden should offer interest throughout the year.

September is the perfect time to take stock. Perhaps your borders have become overgrown, the lawn has seen better days, or your patio and paths could do with some attention. Maybe the garden feels a little tired and you would like to create a more attractive space for relaxing, entertaining or simply enjoying a cup of tea outdoors.

Rather than seeing the end of summer as a reason to put the garden away until next spring, think of it as an opportunity to prepare your outdoor space for the seasons ahead.

There are plenty of smaller jobs that can make an immediate difference, while larger landscaping or garden improvement projects can completely transform how your garden looks and functions.

Give your lawn some attention

After months of football, barbecues, paddling pools, garden games and general summer activity, lawns can often look a little worse for wear by September.

The good news is that early autumn can be an excellent time to give your lawn some care.

Scarifying can help remove dead grass, moss and other material that has built up over the summer. Aerating the lawn can also improve drainage and allow air, water and nutrients to reach the roots more effectively.

If there are bare or damaged patches, September can also be a good time to repair them. Depending on the condition of the lawn, you might consider reseeding or looking at whether a new lawn would provide a better long-term solution.

A healthier lawn is not only more attractive; it can also provide a much better foundation for the rest of your garden.

Refresh your borders and planting

September is a great month to look critically at your planting.

Are your borders looking overcrowded? Have some plants outgrown their space? Are there areas that look bare once the summer flowers have finished?

Tidying, dividing and repositioning plants can make your borders feel considerably fresher. You can also begin thinking about plants that will provide autumn and winter interest, ensuring that your garden continues to have something to offer when the summer displays have disappeared.

September is also traditionally an excellent time for planting many trees, shrubs and hardy perennials. With the soil still retaining some of the warmth of summer, newly planted specimens can have an opportunity to establish their roots before winter arrives.

It is worth considering the structure of your garden as well as its colour. Evergreen shrubs, ornamental grasses, attractive bark and plants with winter stems or berries can all help keep the garden interesting when the days become shorter.

Clear, clean and restore

Sometimes a garden does not need a complete makeover. It simply needs a good clear-out and a little TLC.

Summer can leave behind all sorts of debris, weeds and overgrown vegetation. Clearing away dead growth and removing weeds can instantly make a garden look more cared for.

It is also worth looking at hard landscaping. Patios, paving, paths, walls and other surfaces can accumulate dirt, moss and weeds over time. Cleaning and repairing these areas can make a surprisingly dramatic difference.

Take a walk around the garden and look at it from different angles. Are there cracked paving slabs? Are paths becoming difficult to navigate? Is there a retaining wall that needs attention? Could a tired-looking patio be replaced or extended?

These may seem like relatively small details, but collectively they can have a significant impact on how you use and enjoy the garden.

Create a garden you can actually use

One of the most important questions to ask when revitalising a garden is: What do I want to use this space for?

A garden can be beautiful without being particularly practical. Equally, a well-planned outdoor space can become an extension of your home.

Perhaps you want a dedicated seating area where you can enjoy the morning sun. Maybe you would like somewhere to entertain friends and family during the warmer months. A larger patio, new pathways, raised beds or a more defined lawn area could all help make the garden work better for you.

If you have children, you may also want to think about how the garden can change as they grow. A play area that was perfect a few years ago might no longer be needed, while additional seating, planting or entertaining space could become more valuable.

September provides a useful opportunity to think about these changes before the next gardening season arrives.

A few jobs to tackle in the garden this September

If you are looking for some inspiration, here are a few jobs to put on your September gardening list:

  • Tidy borders by removing spent plants, weeds and excessive growth.
  • Scarify and aerate the lawn to remove thatch and improve its overall condition.
  • Repair bare patches in the lawn by reseeding or considering a new lawn.
  • Plant trees and shrubs while the soil is still relatively warm.
  • Divide suitable perennials that have become overcrowded.
  • Prune plants where appropriate, taking care to check the needs of individual species.
  • Clean patios and paths to remove dirt, moss and accumulated debris.
  • Check fencing and gates for damage before autumn and winter weather arrives.
  • Clear gutters and drainage areas so that leaves and debris do not cause problems.
  • Cut back overgrown vegetation that is encroaching on paths or other areas.
  • Refresh tired planting areas with new plants that will provide autumn and winter interest.
  • Review your garden layout and consider whether it still works for your household.
  • Plan larger projects such as patios, paving, raised beds, retaining walls or new lawns.

You certainly do not need to tackle everything at once. Even a handful of these jobs can make a noticeable difference.

Why September could be the perfect time for a bigger project

If you have been putting off a garden project because summer was simply too busy, September could be the moment to get started.

Once the kids have gone back to school, family routines often settle down again. That can give you the breathing space to properly assess the garden and decide what you would like to change.

Perhaps you have been dreaming about a new patio for years. Maybe your garden needs better drainage, a new lawn, additional planting areas or a complete redesign. Whatever the project, autumn can be a useful time to get work underway and prepare your outdoor space for next spring.

There is also something satisfying about finishing a garden project towards the end of the year. Instead of waiting until the first warm weekend of spring, you can make improvements now and be ready to enjoy the results when the warmer weather returns.

Take advantage of BCLC's September offer

If revitalising your garden has been on your to-do list, there is an added reason to consider getting started this September.

BCLC is currently offering 20% off labour* for works completed within the month of September.

That makes September a particularly appealing time to tackle those larger jobs that have been sitting on the wish list.

Whether your outdoor space needs a relatively simple refresh or a more substantial transformation, investing in your garden can improve both the appearance and functionality of your property.

It is worth remembering that the garden is often one of the largest areas of your home. With the right design and improvements, it can become somewhere to relax, entertain and spend time with family rather than simply an area that needs maintaining.

Think beyond summer

When planning a garden, it is tempting to focus on the months when we are most likely to be outside. But a truly successful garden should work throughout the year.

September is an excellent time to think about what you would like to see when you look out of the window in October, November and beyond.

Could you introduce evergreen planting for year-round structure? Would a new path make the garden easier to enjoy during wetter weather? Could improved lighting make the space more welcoming on darker evenings? Perhaps a sheltered seating area would allow you to use the garden for longer during the year.

These are the kinds of details that can turn a garden from a seasonal feature into a genuinely useful part of your home.

Start planning now

A garden transformation does not necessarily mean starting from scratch. Sometimes the best results come from making a series of considered improvements.

Start by identifying the things that frustrate you most about your garden. Is there not enough seating? Does the lawn dominate too much of the space? Are the borders difficult to maintain? Does the patio feel too small? Is there poor access between different areas?

Once you understand what is not working, it becomes much easier to decide what needs to change.

September is an ideal time to have these conversations and start making plans. Even if the finished project will take some time, getting the process started now means you can head into the next growing season with a clear idea of what you want to achieve.

Make this September the month you fall back in love with your garden

The end of summer does not have to mean the end of enjoying your garden.

With the kids back at school and the hectic summer period beginning to settle, September can offer the perfect opportunity to step outside, take a fresh look at your outdoor space and decide what you would like to change.
