Summer, Sunshine & Skeletons?!

Unearthing Treasures, Raising a Glass, and Building Castles: A Joyful Journey Through Late July and Early August

As the summer sun continues to grace our gardens and the scent of freshly cut grass lingers in the air, the season of relaxation, adventure, and a little bit of discovery is in full swing. From archaeological treasures to beers in the sun and building sandcastles on sandy shores, the end of July and the start of August are bursting with fun, family, and celebration. Whether you're a seasoned green-fingered gardener or just someone who enjoys a well-earned moment in the sun, this time of year is perfect for embracing all the joys that life outdoors can offer.

A Nod to the Past: The Festival of British Archaeology

Every year, between 19th July and 3rd August, we celebrate the Festival of British Archaeology, a national event championing our rich and fascinating heritage. It’s the ideal time to reflect on the countless stories buried beneath our feet – and sometimes, quite literally, right under our noses.

Have you been out pottering in the garden this week and stumbled across something curious? A bit of old pottery? A rusty, mysterious object? A coin that doesn't quite look modern? You might be surprised how often the past makes a reappearance in our flower beds. Britain’s landscape is steeped in history, and it's not uncommon for amateur archaeologists (and accidental diggers) to come across something truly remarkable.

So if you’ve found a little piece of the past recently, why not share it with others? Social media is buzzing this time of year with local history groups and archaeology communities eager to see your discoveries. And who knows – your garden might just sit on a slice of ancient Roman road or a Victorian rubbish tip full of intriguing relics.

For those not lucky enough to find buried treasure, there are plenty of events around the UK during the Festival where you can join digs, take part in workshops, or attend talks to delve deeper into Britain’s archaeology. It’s a wonderful opportunity for all ages to connect with the stories that shaped our land.

Say Cheers to August: International Beer Day – 1st August

As July draws to a close, the promise of a warm and sunny August feels like a reward for making it through the unpredictable British spring and early summer. And what better way to kick off the new month than with a refreshing toast on International Beer Day, celebrated on 1st August?

This day is all about appreciating the craftsmanship behind every pint and the joy of sharing it with good company. Why not gather a few friends and enjoy a casual garden get-together? Whether you’re partial to a local craft ale, a crisp lager, or a non-alcoholic alternative, there’s something for everyone to enjoy under the sun.

Set up some garden chairs, pop up a parasol, maybe even fire up the barbecue – just remember to drink responsibly. It’s easy to get carried away in the warmth of summer merriment, but a balanced and mindful approach ensures the fun lasts longer and everyone has a great time.

If you're feeling in an extra summery mood, you could turn it into a mini tasting session with friends. Ask everyone to bring a beer from a different country, and explore the flavours of the world from the comfort of your own back garden.

Sandcastles and Seaside Smiles: National Sandcastle Day – 2nd August

Following closely on the heels of International Beer Day, National Sandcastle Day arrives on Saturday 2nd August, and it's the perfect excuse for a day by the sea.

Building sandcastles isn’t just a fun activity for kids – it’s a nostalgic, hands-on way for anyone to unwind and let their creative side run wild. Pack up the buckets and spades, lather on the sun cream, and head to your nearest beach for a day of sandy adventures.

Of course, if the little ones are busy or you fancy a solo escape, we fully support adults getting in on the fun too – go ahead and build your own sandy masterpiece, we won’t tell anyone. 🤫

For those unable to make it to the coast, why not create your own miniature beach at home? Fill a tray with sand, grab some small moulds or toys, and let the kids (or yourself) have a mini sandcastle competition in the garden. It’s amazing what a bit of sand, imagination, and sunshine can do.

Rain or Shine: Make the Most of Your Garden This Summer

British weather is famously fickle – one moment you’re basking in a heatwave, the next you’re dashing indoors from a surprise downpour. But come rain or shine, your garden can still be a haven of fun and relaxation for the whole family.

Rainy Day Garden Ideas:

  1. Set up a gazebo or waterproof marquee – Create a sheltered area where you can sit, sip tea, or watch the rain while staying dry.
  2. Have a garden scavenger hunt – Use waterproof clues and send the kids (or adults) on a hunt around the garden. Add a small prize at the end for extra excitement.
  3. Build a mini bug hotel – Rain brings out all sorts of garden critters. Use twigs, pinecones, and bits of old wood to create a snug little shelter for insects. It’s both educational and eco-friendly!
  4. Garden crafts under cover – Collect leaves and flowers beforehand and get creative with pressing, painting, or making nature collages.
  5. Puddle play (with wellies and waterproofs!) – If you can’t beat the rain, jump in it. Splashing in puddles never loses its charm.

Don’t let the clouds dampen your spirits – with a bit of creativity, you can turn even the greyest garden day into a delightful family memory.

Embrace the Season

So whether you’re digging for history, raising a glass to friendship, or building a sandy kingdom by the sea, this late July and early August have plenty to offer.

Take a moment to appreciate your garden – big or small – as a space for connection, celebration, and a little slice of adventure. It's not just about sunshine and clear skies; it’s about the experiences we share and the memories we make.

So get outside, enjoy what the season has to offer, and don’t forget to look down – you never know what fascinating find might be waiting beneath your feet.
